Exclusive Interview with
Dr. Alvin Poussaint

ALVIN F. POUSSAINT, M.D., is a father; a husband; an author of a myriad of books and articles; an expert on children, race relations in America, diversity, and the dynamics of prejudice whose views are constantly sought out by the media; a consultant to government agencies and private corporations; a Professor of Psychiatry and the Faculty Associate Dean of the Harvard Medical School; the Director of the Media Center at the Judge Baker Children's Center; a member of the Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry; and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Although the world "beats a path to his door", hangs on his every word, and showers him with accolades and honors, in the eyes of his two-year old daughter and twenty-two year old son, DR. POUSSAINT is just simply "Dad". Amazingly, the center of Dr. Poussaint's universe lies squarely with his family.

So, we wanted to know how DR. POUSSAINT is able to balance "being all things to all people" with his role as a Father. He says it's all about being disciplined and making time for your children.

"Well," Dr. Poussaint explained, "I think you schedule your life in such a way that you are able to play a dominant role in the lives of your children, but you are always stretched and you are always juggling. I have to make special efforts to spend time with my children. For instance, with my two year old -- I can't work late at night even if I wanted to. I keep my travel out of town to a minimum. When I do travel, I keep it to one night away from home so that I can spend as much time with her as possible. I see her in the mornings - before I leave for work - at breakfast. I see her in the evenings at dinner. And if my wife and I need to go away on extended business trips, we take her with us if we can. There are a lot of errands that I have to do and I take her along. For instance, when I go shopping, I take her with me. That helps keep a lot of contact going between her and me. You have to be disciplined about your time and you have to make time for your kids."
